{"id":4781,"date":"2021-10-06T10:00:59","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T02:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/terroirsense.com\/?p=4781"},"modified":"2021-09-30T14:47:20","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T06:47:20","slug":"the-montana-diaries-part-2-huckleberry-hounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/terroirsense.com\/en\/p\/4781.html","title":{"rendered":"The Montana Diaries Part 2: Huckleberry Hounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>September, 2021<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Episode Two:<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 Several pairs of cowboy boots later, we packed up the considerably more crowded SUV, said goodbye to Missoula and headed north to Whitefish and Flathead Lake.\u00a0 Flathead Lake is in the northwest corner of Montana, sitting in a valley between two mountain ranges.\u00a0 It offers a stunning panorama and the setting of many childhood memories.\u00a0 It\u2019s also famous for many varieties of cherries and despite a real estate boom, many of the orchards remain.\u00a0 There\u2019s a certain rusticity to the area depicted in log cabin lodges and homes, campgrounds and general stores.\u00a0 You can choose to drive up to Whitefish and Kalispell on the east or west side of the lake.\u00a0 The western side will get you to your destination faster however, the eastern side has more beautiful scenery, orchards and gorgeous views of the lakes.\u00a0 We chose the east side but before we veered east, I had a special destination in mind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4786\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/1-2.jpg 630w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/1-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Richwine\u2019s Burgerville<\/strong> (50567 US Highway 93, Polson, MT) is an old-school drive-in restaurant in Polson, MT at the southern tip of Flathead Lake at the literal fork in the road. They\u2019ve been a family tradition and destination for burger lovers and huckleberry milkshakes for over 50 years.\u00a0\u00a0 The huckleberry milkshake was cold, creamy, sweet, rich and chock full of fresh huckleberries.\u00a0 There were so many huckleberries in the shake that you had to stop and push the stuck berries out of the straw so you could keep sucking up milkshake deliciousness.\u00a0 The stuck berries also help slow down your desire to inhale the entire milkshake in one sitting and getting a brain freeze headache.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4787\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/2-2.jpg 558w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/2-2-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fortified with Vitamin Huckleberry, we headed around the lake to Big Fork, MT where my grandparents had an Airstream Trailer.\u00a0 I wish I had that Airstream today.\u00a0 It was so primo vintage.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the campground on the lake shore has been developed into condominiums but the cute town of Big Fork remains.\u00a0 There are a few restaurants, a great silver and turquoise shop, some galleries, a few boutiques and <strong>Eva Gates Homemade Preserves<\/strong> (456 Electric Avenue, Big Fork, MT) established in 1949.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4788\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"188\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4789\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/4-1.jpg 481w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/4-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I\u2019m really a dummy.\u00a0 We walked in the shop to buy some homemade huckleberry and cherry preserves.\u00a0 The smell in the shop was amazing.\u00a0 Warm berry syrup aroma permeated everything.\u00a0 I looked at my sister and said, \u201cDo you think they make their own preserves here?\u201d\u00a0 She looked at me like I had 17 heads and answered, \u201cUm look over there.\u201d\u00a0 There was a very tall man with a big wooden paddle stirring a steaming caldron of huckleberries, sugar and pectin.\u00a0 Duh.<\/p>\n<p>We stocked up on preserves and headed north around the lake to the lovely town of Whitefish and our condominium for the next few nights.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4790\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/6-1.jpg 502w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/6-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whitefish has become a destination in Montana for snow skiing, hiking, water skiing and resort life.\u00a0 Some people refer to it as a baby Aspen.\u00a0 It\u2019s very picturesque nestled into the Rocky Mountains.\u00a0 Often visitors us Whitefish as a base camp for touring Glacier National Park.\u00a0 My uncle lives here, and we spent a few nights visiting.\u00a0 On our way out of Whitefish we stopped at <strong>Fleur Bake Shop<\/strong> (103 Central Avenue, Whitefish, MT) to grab some huckleberry pastries for the drive up to West Glacier and our horseback ride.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4792\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/7-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"515\" huckleberry cheese danish and the huckleberry cinnamon roll were amazing.\u00a0 They combined the right balance of savory, sweet and tart and gave us the strength to handle these beauties.\u00a0 I told you huckleberries were versatile!!<\/p>\n<p>After our trail ride, we continued up the highway to our dome \u201cglampers\u201d for the night.\u00a0 Before glamping-out, we decided to stop at <strong>The Huckleberry Patch<\/strong> (8868 Highway 2E, Hungry Horse, MT) and <strong>Huckleberry Jam Pie<\/strong> Factory (8730 Highway 2E, Hungry Horse, MT) for a Huckleberry Milkshake Showdown.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Mano a Mano.\u00a0 Huckleberry Shake v Huckleberry Shake.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4793\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/8-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/8-1.jpg 706w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/8-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4794\" Huckleberry Patch.\u00a0 Unanimous.\u00a0 It just had more berry flavor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4795\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/10-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/10-1.jpg 551w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/10-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, we arrived at Clear Sky Domes, Glacier National Park.\u00a0 These domes were a once in a lifetime experience.\u00a0 Two stories of luxury in the middle of the woods complete with a gas fireplace and a clear sky roof for uninterrupted star gazing.\u00a0 We even busted out the matching cowgirl pj\u2019s I bought us for the trip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4796\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/11-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/11-2.jpg 375w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/11-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/11-2-332x443.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4797\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/12-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/12-1.jpg 280w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/12-1-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well, let me just say that the night got WILD and I am not referring to the wild animals in the forest.\u00a0 I am referring to my Mom and my Sis and their huckleberry cocktails.\u00a0 It all started out calmly when we walked over to the tavern for a little bite to eat.\u00a0 The cook hadn\u2019t shown up for work that night so food was scarce, but the drinks were flowing.\u00a0 There were guests in the bar, but it was kind of subdued.\u00a0 I grabbed a deck of cards.\u00a0 Mom swore she never learned how to play any card games in her life so we taught her how to play Gin.\u00a0 The next thing you know, the whole tavern is playing card games, Mom wipes us out, wins it all and they are wasted.\u00a0 Those drinks were not only delicious.\u00a0 They were strong and dangerous.\u00a0 The sweet-tart berry flavor really hid the alcohol!\u00a0 Here\u2019s the picture of them with the first round:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4798\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/13-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/13-1.jpg 549w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/13-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here they are leaning on each other as we walked back to our dome:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4799\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/14-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/14-1.jpg 608w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/09\/14-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wish I could post video in this diary because there\u2019s one of my mother swinging in circles in the hanging chair in the dome screaming \u201cWHEEEEEE\u201d that is hilarious\u2026..
