{"id":4303,"date":"2021-08-11T10:47:24","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T02:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/terroirsense.com\/?p=4303"},"modified":"2021-08-15T13:26:37","modified_gmt":"2021-08-15T05:26:37","slug":"the-lobster-diaries-roll-ing-on-the-maine-coast-day-1-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/terroirsense.com\/en\/p\/4303.html","title":{"rendered":"The Lobster Diaries:  Roll-ing on the Maine Coast, Day 1 &#038; 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DAY 1: AUGUST 2, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meet my Mom, Ginger.\u00a0 She retired 20 or so years ago, moved to the New Hampshire White Mountains pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a ski bum and Yes\u2026 she still skis.\u00a0 With Ginger driving, we set off on our Mid-Maine Coast Lobster Roll-A-Thon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4304\" title=\"7cbf784169abfb09e9397e032aa42911\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/7cbf784169abfb09e9397e032aa42911.png\" alt=\"7cbf784169abfb09e9397e032aa42911\" width=\"337\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/7cbf784169abfb09e9397e032aa42911.png 337w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/7cbf784169abfb09e9397e032aa42911-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/7cbf784169abfb09e9397e032aa42911-332x443.png 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We hit the Road heading for Boothbay Harbor but before we crossed the state line into Maine, we stopped at <strong>Frye\u2019s<\/strong> in Conway, NH (1642 E Main St, Center Conway, NH 03813; Tel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Frye%E2%80%99s+in+Conway&amp;sxsrf=ALeKk03D3zpvGdC2iNsZvT8EUCTvFk2cqw%3A1628066276973&amp;source=hp&amp;ei=5FEKYcr8OMGV-wSGlL3YAQ&amp;iflsig=AINFCbYAAAAAYQpf9LwxKcwsHAqtS29kS6OntyC7jYGT&amp;oq=Frye%E2%80%99s+in+Conway&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBggAEBYQHjIGCAAQFhAeMgYIABAWEB4yBggAEBYQHjIGCAAQFhAeMggIABAWEAoQHjIGCAAQFhAeMgYIABAWEB4yCAgAEBYQChAeMgYIABAWEB5Qgx1Ygx1g6ypoAXAAeACAAYYCiAGGApIBAzItMZgBAKABAqABAQ&amp;sclient=gws-wiz&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjK_u3A-5byAhXByp4KHQZKDxsQ4dUDCAg&amp;uact=5\">(603) 447-2955<\/a>) for a little Lobster Roll snack.\u00a0 Loaded with lobster, this roll was a pretty good warm up for the goodness yet to come.\u00a0 Mostly claws and lightly dressed with a dollop of mayo, we found the submarine style bread a little overwhelming.\u00a0 We trashed the roll and just ate the lobster salad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4306\" title=\"3918da6923fcf3a86d6e54f5dbe39b5f\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/3918da6923fcf3a86d6e54f5dbe39b5f.png\" alt=\"3918da6923fcf3a86d6e54f5dbe39b5f\" width=\"385\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/3918da6923fcf3a86d6e54f5dbe39b5f.png 385w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/3918da6923fcf3a86d6e54f5dbe39b5f-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/3918da6923fcf3a86d6e54f5dbe39b5f-332x443.png 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our wine pairing was one of my favorite summer wines:\u00a0 <strong>Chateau Thivin 2018 Cru Beaujolais Morgon Cuvee Zacharie<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ripe black cherry, black berry and raspberry jam flavors up front with a mineral vein centering the wine on our palate and an earthy persistent finish\u2026 absolutely delicious and a fantastic wine by itself to be sure.\u00a0 However, we found the ripeness and richness of the 2018 vintage to be a bit too overpowering for the delicate lobster flavors.<\/p>\n<p>Crossing the state line on our way to Boothbay Harbor, we made a slight detour down to the shore in Freeport to check out the <strong>Harraseeket Lobster Shack<\/strong> (36 Main Street, South Freeport, ME 04078; (207) 865-3535\/865-4888).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4307\" title=\"45ec4c7c3d529d84ec9e4c36f15c517e\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/45ec4c7c3d529d84ec9e4c36f15c517e.png\" alt=\"45ec4c7c3d529d84ec9e4c36f15c517e\" width=\"304\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/45ec4c7c3d529d84ec9e4c36f15c517e.png 304w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/45ec4c7c3d529d84ec9e4c36f15c517e-226x300.png 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We watched a truck of lobsters and freshly caught haddock unloaded while our lobster roll was prepared.\u00a0 Here we were able to bring our own alcoholic beverages and experiment with a classic and local Maine wine pairing\u2026 bonus points for Harraseeket Lobster Shack!<\/p>\n<p>The Lobster Roll was great\u2026 lightly tossed with mayo, super fresh, briny sweet and very delicate. Clearly, an entire picked and cleaned lobster was crammed into the classic split bun.\u00a0\u00a0 We were a little let down by the actual roll which was unevenly toasted, lacked butter and honestly lacked flavor too.\u00a0 The big monster green leaf lettuce leaf looked great but was kind of annoying.\u00a0 Once again, we chowed on the lobster itself leaving the accoutrements alone.\u00a0 SIDE BAR:\u00a0 Cole Slaw was delicious!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4308\" title=\"c45a9b8afabdb6af755364a61c62edeb\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/c45a9b8afabdb6af755364a61c62edeb.png\" alt=\"c45a9b8afabdb6af755364a61c62edeb\" width=\"325\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/c45a9b8afabdb6af755364a61c62edeb.png 325w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/c45a9b8afabdb6af755364a61c62edeb-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We tried the <strong>Rafael Palacios 2017 Godello \u201cLouro\u201d<\/strong> and a local recommendation, <strong>Honeymaker Lavender Mead<\/strong> with our lobster roll.\u00a0 Truth be told, I was seriously skeptical about this mead stuff\u2026 I mean really\u2026 a honey fermented beverage with LOBSTER????<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4309\" title=\"f4ff3e190f410f1bedb28b0762cf7f0d\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/f4ff3e190f410f1bedb28b0762cf7f0d.png\" alt=\"f4ff3e190f410f1bedb28b0762cf7f0d\" width=\"314\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/f4ff3e190f410f1bedb28b0762cf7f0d.png 314w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/f4ff3e190f410f1bedb28b0762cf7f0d-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cLouro\u201d Godello was bright and citrusy with lemon and lime notes, a sharp mineral focus, moderate acidic lift, some leesy flavors and a salty briny finish.\u00a0 It was really an excellent wine pair with our Lobster Roll.<\/p>\n<p>The Honeymaker Lavender Mead was a SHOCKER\u2026 The attack on the palate started with all the honey elements minus the sugar, a hint of bright lavender, sweet, fresh green herbs, a hint of elderflower and a persistent dry finish.\u00a0 Frankly, we were amazed.\u00a0 It was light and refreshing and as Ginger said\u2026 \u201cYummy in her Tummy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Honeymaker Lavender Mead!<\/p>\n<p>After a bit of a hiccup\u2026..<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4310\" title=\"276bab22d97d79b2db4942b263529de7\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/276bab22d97d79b2db4942b263529de7.png\" alt=\"276bab22d97d79b2db4942b263529de7\" width=\"320\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/276bab22d97d79b2db4942b263529de7.png 320w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/276bab22d97d79b2db4942b263529de7-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We headed to Boothbay Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, we had <strong>Red\u2019s Eats<\/strong> (41 Water St, Wiscasset, ME 04578; Tel: (207) 633-4900.) which came highly recommended.\u00a0 They sell lots and lots of different seafood but their specialty is lobster.\u00a0 They will steam \u2018em, fry \u2018em, roll \u2018em and ship \u2018em\u2026. Serious business and seriously fresh with pretty outdoor seating right on the bay\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4316\" title=\"baa355a43536fe9daf1c629a7cce1c4b\" src=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/baa355a43536fe9daf1c629a7cce1c4b.png\" alt=\"baa355a43536fe9daf1c629a7cce1c4b\" width=\"282\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/baa355a43536fe9daf1c629a7cce1c4b.png 282w, https:\/\/s.terroirsense.com\/2021\/08\/baa355a43536fe9daf1c629a7cce1c4b-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sad to say this Lobster Roll was disappointing.\u00a0 We chose the 10 oz size and received a little bit of a mess on a bun\u2026..rubbery, tough and disheveled laid out on an untoasted, flavorless hotdog bun\u2026. No lobster rolls here, but between 50 and 60 pies are freshly baked every day.\u00a0 I have to say I was a little bit surprised considering that my Mom, Ginger is a pretty excellent pie baker in her own right.<\/p>\n<p>Ayuh! (as they say in Maine\u2026.) she wasn\u2019t kidding\u2026. I had the warm four berry pie with vanilla ice cream and it was AMAZING.\u00a0 Sweet, Tart, Savory, Warm perfection\u2026..
